What to have in mind for effective landscape irrigation

There are many factors in play when it comes to landscape irrigation. Ensuring your land is properly watered is vital, whether you want fully flower garden with shiny colours or simply want your lawn to be lush and green. Both over and under-watering can cause a myriad of problems if you choose a wrong cheap solution, wasting money and time replacing plants, losing the garden brightness and effecting other landscape elements, such as passways, sittings areas and others. So, before you begin implementing an irrigation system, it’s a good idea to have full understanding of your requirements, and of the systems available to you.

Soft landscape includes two main elements Lawns & trees –shrubs –ground covers, each element needs different system to provide the needed water to the plant, so let’s take a look to know the difference between the two systems.

Sprinkler System

Lawns need an irrigation system to provide a big amount of water for wide-scale of green area; sprinkler system is the best way to do it.

A good sprinkler system can be highly effective. If the sprinkler locations are well planned, wastage of water due to the sprinkler hitting pathways etc. can be kept to a minimum. While a basic hose and sprinkler system is incredibly simple to set up, an in-ground sprinkler system is far superior and can even add value to your home. No longer do you have to stand around with a hose, you simply initiate the sprinkler system, or simpler still, have it on a timer or with a sensor to irrigate the ground when it is dry.

Sprinklers are suitable to be used with most types of soil, other than clay soil as the water doesn’t absorb easily into clay. They’re also compatible with the use of soluble chemicals and fertilisers. In hot countries, where large areas need to be irrigated, sprinklers can be a highly efficient method.

Drip Irrigation

Trees, shrubs & ground covers usually surrounded the lawn edge, so they need water just right under the plant; drip irrigation system is the best way to do that.

A drip irrigation system delivers water specifically to the roots, right where it is needed. It’s a targeted system, so there’s very little water wastage if the system is running correctly without any leaks. It’s not prone to water loss from evaporation and it ensures that even the bushiest of plants benefit from the water. As the water is delivered very slowly, it doesn’t pool so you don’t have issues with runoff on uneven land. Add in a sensor and you can ensure that your plants are not watered while it is raining, and extra water can be delivered when it is particularly dry. With a drip irrigation system, you can easily isolate areas so you can target those plants that require a lot of water more frequently than those that prefer a drier environment.
